Red Kangaroo Recovered in Montérégie Now Under the Care of Zoo de Granby

Press release

Granby, June 17 – Zoo de Granby confirms that, at the request of the Ministère de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs, it has agreed to temporarily take in the red kangaroo recently recovered in the Montérégie region.

Upon arrival, the animal was immediately taken in charge by our animal care and zoological medicine teams. We are pleased to confirm that he is doing well. This morning, he was alert and feeding normally. Following the events of the past few days and his extended escape, what he needs most at this time is peace, quiet, and rest.

The kangaroo is currently housed in an environment adapted to his needs, away from public view, and under conditions that support his recovery and well-being. Our teams continue to monitor and closely assess the animal.

Zoo de Granby teams will draw on their expertise and specialized facilities to provide the highest standard of care during this transitional period, while the competent authorities determine the most appropriate long-term solution to meet his needs. Our priority remains the animal’s welfare, and we will provide him with all necessary attention and care throughout this period of temporary care.

To minimize sources of stress and support his adaptation, the kangaroo will not be visible to the public during his stay at Zoo de Granby.

Zoo de Granby is working closely with the Ministry on this matter and thanks all teams involved for their trust and coordinated efforts in successfully carrying out this intervention. To ensure consistency in public communications, all inquiries regarding the file, regulatory aspects, the circumstances of the intervention, and the animal’s future will be handled by the Ministry’s Media Relations Office.

We also wish to remind that the keeping of exotic animals in captivity is regulated under current legislation in Québec and subject to strict requirements designed to ensure both animal welfare and public safety. Any possession, custody, or care of such animals must comply with these rules, which are essential to prevent risks and ensure appropriate conditions. It is important that all parties involved comply with them strictly.
